Herschel Britton, 75, of Corbin (Laurel County) passed away in his home on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. Herschel, a retired United States postal worker, was a United States Marine Corps and Vietnam War Veteran. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and a former member of the Patriot Guard Riders.

Born in Lily, Kentucky, on September 20, 1945, Herschel spent large portions of his life living in Independence, Kentucky, and Portage, Indiana. He was a proud 1963 graduate of Simon Kenton High School in Independence.

Herschel is survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda (Prickett); his two children: Kim Smith (Roger) of Corbin and Kevin Britton (Christy) of Richmond, Kentucky; his two grandchildren, Ryan Smith (Olivia) and Shaylee Smith; one brother: James Britton; two sisters: Ruth Kennedy and Lois Cuthbert; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlo and Hazel (Black) Britton; his sister, Juanita; and his brother, Harvey Wayne Britton.

Herschel enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, motorcycle trips on his Honda Gold Wing, and watching Eastern Kentucky University basketball and baseball games.

Visitation will be held at Hart Funeral Home in Corbin on Sunday, November 1, 2020, from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. A burial service will be held at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on Monday, November 2, 2020, at 11 A.M. Military rites will be conducted by the Man of War Post 8 American Legion Honor Guard. Kenny Lundy, Ed Mattingly, Richard Peebles, Jimmy Poynter, Calvin Rhoden, and Mike Reed will serve as pallbearers. Charlie Hale, Hobart Hale, and Larry Hart will be honorary pallbearers.

Due to COVID-19, face coverings and social distancing are required.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

    So very sorry for your loss. Herschel was always good and kind to me. I know it will be a difficult time for you. You all will be in my thoughts ad prayers.

    I always enjoyed working with Herschel. He was always an inspiration to me, and enjoyable to be around. Never had an ill word about anyone. Retired Postal worker, Pam.

    Aunt Linda and family I wish I could be there and I am so sorry for your loss. Uncle Hershel was an amazing man with the kindest soul and a hug that put together a 100 broken pieces. He will be missed and this world is definitely a lot dimmer without his light. Sending you all my love.
