Verla Mae Brewer

January 21, 1921 - March 21, 2016

Verla Mae Brewer, 95, of Corbin passed away Monday, March 21, 2016, at Baptist Health Corbin.  Born January 21, 1921, in Redbird, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William Gillis Davis and Ollie Davis.  She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church.

She married Coy Brewer on July 15, 1939.  Her husband, a Southern Baptist minister, pastored several area churches including Hopewell Baptist Church, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church in London, Bronston Baptist Church, and Bethel Baptist Church in Eubank.  Along with her husband, she enjoyed church ministry and taught Sunday school and Bible school.

A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she made every holiday special for her family by preparing their favorite traditional meals and bestowing gifts.  Further, she demonstrated a caring nature by making clothes for several years and donating them to various missions and church ministries.  She also worked at Mitchell’s Hardware in Corbin where she held many duties, especially in the china and wedding planning sections.  In later years while living at the Friendship House, her love for reading led to her participation in a Book Club.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Brewer; four sisters: Thelma, Edna, Elva, and Jenny; two brothers: Kenneth and Frank, special step-sister, Ada, and granddaughter, Peggy Bowman.

Survivors include three children: Ramona Harp and husband Kenneth of Keavy, Patricia Brewer of La Follett, TN, and Daniel Brewer and wife Donna of Berea; six grandchildren: James Harp and wife Sharon, Richard Harp and wife Ginger, Kevin Noe and wife Catherine, Eric Brewer and wife Marina, Neil Brewer and wife Belinda, and Danielle Jaeger and husband Mark; 10 great grandchildren: Andrew Bowman, Matthew Bowman, Rachel Harp, Joshua Harp, Jessica Harp, Sam Harp, Lucas Brewer, Ashley Prior, Gabriella Brewer, and Nathan Brewer; two special nieces: Betty and Lora; and a dear friend, June Taylor, as well as other relatives and numerous friends.  She will be deeply mourned and sorely missed.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 25, 2016, in the Hart Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doyle Lester officiating.  Burial will follow in Corinth Cemetery with Jim Harp, Richard Harp, Neil Brewer, Lucas Brewer, Joshua Harp, Andrew Bowman, and Matthew Bowman serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour at 1:00 P.M. at Hart Funeral Home, Inc., located at 1011 Master Street in Corbin.

I was privileged to know Verla Mae. She was one of the most gracious Christian Ladies I have ever known. She had such a kind and loving heart. She was not just a hearer of the Word of God, but a doer. She has entered into a great reward for the unselfish life she lived here. Still, I know it is so hard when those we love and have meant so much to our lives are no longer with us. My kindest sympathies are extended to the family she so dearly loved and my prayers for great grace to carry you through this time.
